The Big Coconut: Al Dente

In culinary, we often hear the word Al Dente, especially when we are cooking pasta. But what does "Al Dente" really mean?

Al Dente describes pasta and rice or beans that have been cook so as to be firm but not hard. It also described vegetables that cooked to a "tender crisp" phase. The term al dente comes from the Italian which means "to the tooth" or "to the bite" referring to the need to chew the pasta due to its firmness.

Always remember to add salt and oil when you are cooking pasta. This will prevent the pasta to stick. Also, if there are no instructions at the back of the package, try a piece of the pasta and check if it is firm but not that hard and not too soft. It's in the matter of calculations because not all pasta cook according to accurate minutes.
