The Big Coconut: Fold, Beat, Mix and Stir

When we read baking books or recipe books that deals with baking, we often read the words "fold", "beat:, "mix" and "stir". So what is the difference among this four methods?

During cooking classes at school before, I encounter a lot of people who got the wrong idea when they see the procedure that asks them to either fold, beat, mix or stir. They usually do the same thing for the four methods which are actually different from one another. Here are its meanings:

Fold - is to combine a light mixture to a heavier mixture yet retaining much air as possible.

Beat - it is not only combining the ingredients together but introduce air into the mixture.

Mix - mixing the ingredients using spoon or fork evenly.

Stir - to move one's hand or a implement continuously or repeatedly through a liquid or other substance.
