The Big Coconut: Cleaning Your Refrigerator

Sorry I haven't posted anything much this month. I became so busy at work with those additional tasks and when I get home, I had also other personal things to attend to. As much as I want to have time blogging, important stuff came in my way and I needed to deal with them :) But as I said before, I will try my best to update.

The Christmas season is totally over and I'm pretty sure that most of you guys out there are noticing that your fridge is a mess. You have to admit it that from the preparation, to cooking and to the storing of food during the holidays, we sometimes get carried away with the "rush cooking" and tend to forgot the arrangement of the food containers inside the fridge and freezer So since we are in the new year now and the holiday cooking is done, why not we clean up our fridge? Because there is nowhere better in storing your left over food than your fridge. Here's some easy steps on how to clean it:

1. Defrosting - just remove the plug and take out every container and plastics bags from the fridge and freezer. Removing them will make the defrosting faster. Place all frozen items on a tray to prevent the melted ice from dripping. For non-frozen items, just place them on the table. Defrosting would take about 5-10 minutes and while waiting for it you can check out the items you just removed and see which ones you should still keep or throw away. You can also change containers when you see a few servings of food inside a large container - that would definitely occupy space.

2. Cleaning - you need a basin and two clean rags (one for wet and the other one is for drying). Start cleaning from top to bottom especially if you own a single door fridge. This will make the cleaning process easier because if there are any possible bits of food from the top part, they will all fall down as you clean. Add water in your basin about a half full and add a few drops of dish washing liquid. For those removable racks inside, you can gently remove them and wash them normally on the sink and have them towel-dried. Now, for the insides of the freezer and fridge, use one rag, dip it into the basin with water and soap; wring the rag then clean. Repeat the process until the inside part is clean and the stains are gone. Use the other rag for drying. For the outside part, you can do the same cleaning process especially the door handles where the finger prints and markings are plenty. There is this product we use to clean the outer part of the fridge . I forgot its name but it's actually designed for polishing cars and table tops but it can also be used for refrigerators. It's a liquid-like wax and you just need a few amounts of it on a dry rag and polish the doors in circular motion. The whole fridge will be shiny and this also serves as a protective covering against minor scratches and water.

3. Deodorize - strong smelling foods are the culprit for making your fridge stinky! Sometimes, even if you store them in air-tight containers, the smell still comes out after a while. A good way to eliminate odor is to buy those fridge deodorizers you see in the local grocery stores. Although there are different brands for it, go for those that lasts longer. If you don't have time for that, why not get a cotton ball, and pour a few drops of food flavoring of your liking. I tried using Vanilla Extract and our fridge smells great. Though it only lasts about a week, you can just pour additional drops of food flavoring before the smells fades. It really works and it's cheaper too. What you are going to do with the cotton ball with food flavoring is to place that in the innermost corner of the fridge. It's much better if you place it near the air passage when the cool air flows.

4. Arrange - when you are done cleaning and polishing the doors, the last part is very easy. Simply place the racks back to where they are and store all the items back accordingly. Remember to check on the thermostat dial so you can adjust the coldness of the fridge. Enjoy your fresh and clean fridge!~ : )
