The Big Coconut: A Few Tips to Know When Buying Fish

I'll admit: fish is definitely one of my not-so-favorite foods in the world. But sometimes I do need to eat them for health reasons and sometimes I do need to buy them. So what do we need to check when buying fresh Fish?

1. Eyes - they should be clear, glassy and shiny. Eyes that are yellowish, reddish or bloodshot eyes are one of the signs that the fish is not fresh anymore.

2. Gills - gills should be pink to red in color. If they are dark red and slimey that means they are no good.

3. Scales - check if the scales are metallic-like in color especially if the fish is silver-colored in nature. For those fishes that are of different varieties of colors then make sure the colors are bright and not dull.

3. Texture - try and press the meat of the fish with your fingers. If it bounces back then it's fresh.

4. Smell - yes fish are smelly but it should have the fishy or "sea" odor. But if it smells beyond that, its no good.
