The Big Coconut: Things to know before Buying Canned Foods

Sometimes, certain ingredients whether it's fruit, vegetable or meat are not easy to find in markets and groceries especially those that are not in season or those that are not a native to our country. What do we do? We buy the canned ones! They may not be as fresh as the fresh ones found in markets and groceries but they are the next best thing. But we must remember some important points before buying Canned Food and these are:

1. Expiry Date - yes they may be preserved but they are only edible for quite some time. Every can has an expiry date or best before seal which may be found on top, at the bottom or on the label. This will help you know when item will be expired. Take note that eating expired Canned Food will cause food poisoning.

2. Dents - buying Canned Foods with dents on the can is not a good idea. At certain stores, cans with dents would cost you half of its original price but I would not risk my health for it. It is said that these dents can affect the acidity of the preservatives added to the food and this might shorten the shelf-life of it.

3. Bloated Cans - not only these are way past their expiry date but some bloated Canned Foods might actually explode if you try to open them. Just don't buy them even if it's on sale!

4. Incorrect Labels - I know this might sound funny but we can't be too sure right? Make sure that when you buy Canned Foods, check the label and check if all the cans in the shelf are of the same shapes and sizes. Factories do commit mistakes sometimes and it's good to double check. You don't want to buy peas in can but when you open them they are corn kernels just because you read it as "peas" on the label.

So these are some important things you must be mindful of when buying Canned Foods. It's always better to be safe and buying items on sale, especially food, is not practical all the time : ) Health is always wealth
