The Big Coconut: Basil


Scientific Name: Ocimum basilicum
Basil is native in India, Iran and other tropical parts of Asia. In parts of Europe basil is also know as Saint Joseph's Wort. It comes from the Greek word "basileus" which means "king" as it was believed that the first basil was discovered on an area where Saints Helen and Constantine discovered the Holy Cross. It is also considered as the "king of herbs".

Its plant is bushy and grows in tropical countries. The leaves are light green in color, has a silky texture and its flowers are white in color. Other types of basil includes, Lemon Basil, Thai Basil, Sweet Basil and Asian Basil.

Basil is a good source of Vitamin A. It's good for the skin as well as for the eyes. It also contains beta-carotene, lutein and zea-xanthin which are good compound to prevent aging and other types of diseases. It has essential oils such as citral, eugenol and limonene that are know to have anti-bacterial and anti-inflamatory properties. It contains minerals such as potassium, manganese, magnesium and copper which helps control blood rate and heart problems. Basil intake is very good for the elderly to promote good health and to prevent diseases.

Basil is commonly used in Italian dishes and is used freshly in most dishes although dried basil can be used too. It is the primary ingredient in making Pesto. It can also be used in soups and sauces.
