The Big Coconut: Cashew Nuts


Scientific Name: Anacardium occidentale
Cashew nuts are a native in South America and later on it was imported to different parts of the world. Its tree grows over 30 feet tall and the color of the leaves are dark green. Its flowers are mint green in color at first then turns to red. The tree produces what they call "false fruit" which is the Cashew Apple. This false fruit has a yellowish-red color and it is edible. At the end of each fruit hangs a kidney-shaped nut which is called the "true fruit" and that is actually the Cashew nut.

Cashew nuts are high in calories yet they contain lots of minerals that fight diseases. They contain monounsaturated fatty acids which is good for the heart and they also contain Lutein that is good for the eyes. Cashew nuts also contain lots of minerals that help prevent deficiency diseases.

Cashew nuts are usually eaten for snacks. It can be salted or unsalted and it can be coated with sugar or anything spicy as well.  The Cashew apple can also be cooked or eaten raw. In some Asian countries, the Cashew apples are cooked with curry.
