The Big Coconut: Shiitake Mushrooms


Scientific Name: Lentinula edodes
Shiitake Mushrooms are a native to Japan and to some parts of the East Asian countries. It comes the Japanese word "shii" which is a tree on which the mushrooms are cultivated. The color of these mushrooms are light brown and the cap is slightly curved.
Shiitake Mushrooms are also called Black Forest Mushrooms, Golden Oak Mushrooms or Chinese Black Mushrooms.

Shiitake Mushrooms are a very good source of iron, selenium, protein and Vitamin C. The extract of Shiitake Mushroom is also good for cancer prevention as well as it is good for the blood pressure. It is also good to reduce cholesterol but eating too much will cause diarrhea.

It is very popular in Chinese cuisines and these mushrooms are used as ingredients for medicine. Shiitake Mushrooms are often sautéd along with other vegetables.
